“We just want the city to give the School Department the money to fund the schools properly,” said Bonnie Page, president of the Malden Education Association, a union representing some 750 teachers, specialists, nurses, directors, house/assistant principals and paraprofessionals in the Malden Public Schools. The group protested in front of Malden City Hall this afternoon.

The budget for the next school year has a shortfall of $1.1 million she said. “There still are going to be cuts” to school services, she said.

The group was also opposing the state ballot question that would lift the cap on charter schools across the Commonwealth.

“We’ve got the Mystic Valley Charter School [in Malden], which takes $8.4 million from our budget,” Page said. “They don’t have to make cuts. They’re not laying off anybody.”

Page said, ‘The funding is wrong and nobody is brave enough in the Legislature to do anything.”
