Cambridge Carnival, the annual celebration of Caribbean culture, returned with a smaller, in-person version of the festival after live events were cancelled the previous two years. They paraded from Cambridgeport and through Central Square this afternoon in the usual spectacular fashion.
“After two years of uncertainty, this year’s theme for Cambridge Carnival will be Emancipation. The event will celebrate Emancipation from vaccination, from communities isolated in their homes, and the form of Black Lives Matter,” organizers write.
A virtual Cambridge Carnival was held last year, but the live in-person event was cancelled to prevent the spread of covid. The 2019 event was cancelled under pressure of city of Cambridge leaders who feared there would be gun violence at the event.
