Goodbye to our friend Remi Paillard, a part of the Bread and Puppet Theater for decades. He died Monday. Here are photos I took of him over a number of years at the theater’s Glover, Vermont, farm.
Bread and Puppet Founder Peter Schumann says: “Remi : So often an invisible force doing, fixing, repairing, preparing what would have been forgotten. Mostly, we took him for granted, so much so that when he wasn’t there problems didn’t get solved, got neglected or postponed.
“Remi: High up on a ladder which rests on a chair in the Expo hall in Hannover Germany or equally precarious when mounting the reliefs into the ceiling of the paper-mache cathedral, must now be commissioned to start his afterlife amongst us; at the next occasion when an outhouse has to be moved to a new location we celebrate it with flags and sacred harp songs, to transform his big absence into the festive presence he deserves.”
