“Yogi Bear meets ‘Night of The Living Dead’” is how Boston-area artist Ansis Puriņš describes his
drawings, paintings and comic books in his exhibition “Super Magic Forest” at Somerville’s Washington Street Gallery through Dec. 30, 2017.

They’re related to the graphic novel he’s been working on for a couple years that is set in a world inspired by tantalizingly glimpses of Saturday morning cartoons and Godzilla films that he mostly missed on television during his 1980s childhood.

“I wasn’t able to watch Saturday morning cartoons as a child,” he has said. “Instead, I had to attend Latvian school. … When I came home from Latvian school, I just had to recreate the precious images that I had caught on TV before they slipped away.”
