“A code is defined as a system for communication or a set of rules to mark, represent or identify something,\u201d curator Alexandria Smith writes about the exhibition \u201cCoded,\u201d on view at the Mills Gallery at Boston Center for the Arts<\/a> from Nov. 17, 2018, to Jan. 27, 2019. The featured artists are Laylah Ali, Carla Edwards, Alex Jackson, Steve Locke, Simonette Quamina, Kenny Rivero, Jordan Seaberry and Lachell Workman. \u201cThe New England-based artists in this exhibition have developed languages that recontextualize, reimagine and upend various forms of codes that we have become familiar with over time. Color, in particular, is one form of coding that the artists use as a building block to explore various aesthetic, emotive and psychological experiences. The artists in this show exhibit a range of artistic, technical and conceptual prowess in their work and use color as a character, a trickster, a device and a provocation.”<\/p>\n
