{"id":9139,"date":"2018-10-25T21:19:26","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T01:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=9139"},"modified":"2018-10-26T07:39:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:39:10","slug":"decordova-trustees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2018\/10\/25\/decordova-trustees\/","title":{"rendered":"DeCordova May Become Subsidiary Of Trustees Of Reservations: \u2018This Unstable Financial Model Has Finally Collapsed\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to resolve \u201cunsustainable\u201d budget crunches, <a href=\"https:\/\/decordova.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum<\/a> in Lincoln, Massachusetts, is in talks to become a subsidiary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetrustees.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trustees of Reservations<\/a>, a major Massachusetts cultural and land conservation nonprofit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would change if DeCordova became a part of the Trustees operation? Not a whole lot,\u201d Barbara Erickson, Trustees president and CEO, said when the two organizations presented their agreement to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/decordova.org\/exciting-partnership-decordova-and-trustees-reservations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201can exciting partnership\u201d<\/a> to Lincoln\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lincolntv.viebit.com\/player.php?hash=Px3HJvPQU4Al\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State of the Town Meeting<\/a> last Saturday, Oct. 20. \u201cWe\u2019re interested in DeCordova because of the resources it provides today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erickson praised DeCordova&#8217;s curatorial and education expertise, saying, \u201cThe quality exhibitions and programming opportunities will continue to be sustained.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The plan must be approved by a vote of Lincoln residents, which has been scheduled for March 2019, and is contingent upon completion of a campaign by both organizations to raise $15 million to secure DeCordova\u2019s endowment and operational stability, according to the museum.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lincolntv.viebit.com\/vod\/?v=Px3HJvPQU4Al&amp;s=false\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Help Wonderland keep producing our great coverage of local arts, cultures and activisms (and our great festivals) by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/wonderlandlandfanclub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributing to Wonderland on Patreon<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/subscribe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up for our free, weekly newsletter<\/a> so that you don&#8217;t miss any of our reporting.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A year ago, in September 2017, DeCordova informed Lincoln\u2019s Board of Selectmen that for years it has struggled with an \u201cunsustainable reliance on large annual contributions from a small group of donors to pay regular operating expenses,\u201d the Lincoln Board of Selectmen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolntown.org\/DocumentCenter\/View\/35546\/Working-Group-Charge---Signed?bidId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on May 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fiscal problem is not on the expense side as we control costs tightly and earned revenue \u2026 compares favorably to other museums,\u201d John Ravenal, who has been DeCordova\u2019s executive director since January 2015, said at Saturday\u2019s State of the Town Meeting. \u201cDeCordova\u2019s financial challenges are due to insufficient endowment combined with the ever rising fixed costs needed to operate an independent museum. And over the past two years this unstable financial model has finally collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking for a partner to stem these significant short-term budget issues and help it find long-term stability, DeCordova trustees voted unanimously last spring to pursue integration with the Trustees. The sculpture park, which now totals 28 acres, was inaugurated in 1966.<\/p>\n<p>The town retained ownership of the DeCordova property and oversight as a charitable trustee as it \u201cestablished a non-profit corporation to manage the funds and operations of the museum and park on behalf of the town.
