Many comics conventions are basically trade shows focused on selling books and memorabilia, but this weekend\u2019s Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE)<\/a> was founded in 2010 to focus on the artists\u2014with creators selling their own works and presenting talks and workshops. The free-admission event has grown so that now it attracts creators from New York to Texas to California\u2014including this year Vera Brosgol (\u201cAnya\u2019s Ghost\u201d), Jim Woodring (\u201cThe Frank Book\u201d), and Keith Knight (\u201cThe K Chronicles\u201d). But at MICE\u2019s heart are artists working here in New England. Below (in alphabetical order) are eight local artists to meet at MICE, which runs tomorrow, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at University Hall, 1815 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge.<\/p>\n

Charles Forsman’s \u201cThe End of the Fucking World.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Special festival guest Charles Forsman<\/a><\/strong> of western Massachusetts is a three-time Ignatz Award winner and creator of \u201cThe End of the Fucking World,\u201d a coming of age story of two teens that\u2019s complicated by the fact that the boy harbors sociopathic fantasies and begins to act on them. This year, Netflix adapted it into an original TV series.<\/p>\n

K C Green’s \u201cThis Is Fine.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

K C Green<\/a><\/strong>\u2014the western Massachusetts artist behind the \u201cThis Is Fine\u201d comic turned meme for our obliviousness in the face of our world burning down all around us\u2014also does other stuff too. Like \u201cLittle Comis 4,\u201d debuting at MICE, featuring \u201cshort gag comics about computers, weed and coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caroline Hu’s \u201cThe Little Scientist #1.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Caroline Hu<\/a><\/strong>, a Somerville biologist and cartoonist, is debuting \u201cThe Little Scientist #1,\u201d billed as a fantastical allegory of a young scientist wandering into a magical forest where she begins to transition from a child\u2019s wonder with the world to a professional scientist.<\/p>\n

Katie Langlois’s \u201cHave A Nice Day.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Katie Langlois<\/strong><\/a> of Haverhill debuts \u201cHave A Nice Day,\u201d her collection of awesomely gonzo \u201ccomic diaries and doodles about a human person trying to be alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew MacLean’s \u201cHead Lopper.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Andrew MacLean<\/a><\/strong> of Salem, a special featured guest of the festival, is the creator of \u201cHead Lopper\u201d<\/a> (Image Comics), about the quests and adventures of a Viking warrior and the decapitated head of a witch.<\/p>\n

Ansis Purins\u2019s “Zombre.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Boston cartoonist Ansis Purins<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s comics recount the adventures of an uptight woodland park ranger, elves, and a nature-loving zombie.<\/p>\n

Karl Stevens\u2019s \u201cThe Winner.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Boston cartoonist Karl Stevens<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s latest collection \u201cThe Winner,\u201d drawn in his signature sharply realist style, offers semi-autobiographical musings\u2014at times rueful, at times funny\u2014on everyday boredom, the meaningless pain of life, drinking, the struggles to get his art recognized, and the patience of his wife.<\/p>\n

Beatrix Urkowitz’s “She’s Done It All.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Beatrix Urkowitz<\/a><\/strong> of Providence draws surreal fables rendered with her signature (in the words of the AV Club<\/a>) \u201cbulbous figures, amorphous shapes, and goopy tracts of opaque colors.\u201d<\/p>\n
