{"id":6947,"date":"2018-04-21T12:11:05","date_gmt":"2018-04-21T16:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=6947"},"modified":"2019-06-08T11:00:18","modified_gmt":"2019-06-08T15:00:18","slug":"mainers-create-worlds-largest-so-they-say-ice-merry-go-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2018\/04\/21\/mainers-create-worlds-largest-so-they-say-ice-merry-go-round\/","title":{"rendered":"Mainers Create World\u2019s Largest (So They Say) Ice Merry-Go-Round"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, dozens of Mainers in the far northern reaches of the state created what they say is the largest ice carousel ever made.<\/p>\n<p>The feat\u2014organized by Snowmobile Northern Maine as a fundraiser for the Aroostook County Meals on Wheels program\u2014cut a circle 427 feet wide out of the ice of Long Lake, near the village of Sinclair, and got it spinning on Saturday, April 7, like a giant merry-go-round powered by a number of outboard motors.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JCmEkyO9UjI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019d been foiled some weeks earlier, in mid-March, when they\u2019d first begun the project. More than 100 volunteers used augers, chainsaws and even shovels to cut the giant circle out of the 2.5-foot-thick lake ice. But they could only get it to turn a few inches.
