Boston artist Dell M. Hamilton writes that the artists in the group exhibition \u201c#SayHerName: Watch Us WERK\u201d<\/a> at Lesley University College of Art and Design\u2019s VanDernoot Gallery in Cambridge \u201care driven by one vision: a deep desire to use art in service of creating a more just society. Their rigorous practices interrogate how the construct of race informs their conceptions of selfhood, personal memory, gender, queerness, and global history.\u201d<\/p>\n

The exhibition, on view through April 21, is a showcase of black women artists active in New England. Hamilton, who organized the show, tells me, \u201cWe are present. We are making interesting work. We want to have a conversation with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it\u2019s Boston and New England, there are not a lot of black curators,\u201d Hamilton told the crowd at last night\u2019s opening reception. So she sees the exhibition as a \u201csort of push back\u201d aimed at \u201cmaking black art relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n
