Lucas Spivey\u2019s Odyssey To Find The Answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How can you make a living as an artist?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the question <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lucasspivey.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lucas Spivey<\/a> was again asking when he left a job in Washington state in 2016 and moved back to Boston. Rather than heading right here, \u201cI thought I\u2019ll take my time.\u201d So he turned the trip into a 15,000-mile cross-country odyssey to meet creators and ask (as he says in his \u201cCulture Hustlers\u201d podcast that he launched last November) \u201chow they hacked out their living by selling culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/237137517\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Spivey did it with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themobileincubator.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMobile Incubator.\u201d<\/a> He explains, \u201cSo I\u2019m like, I\u2019m going to make an office. \u2026 And I want it to be really cool.\u201d The result is a traveling office that he created inside a 1957 Shasta camper trailer customized inside with a mosaic made from hundreds of boards of reclaimed wood. (Melissa Blackall)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A bit of background about Spivey. He was born in Minnesota, grew up in Wisconsin and Alaska, summering in Georgia and South Carolina. In 2009, he earned an undergraduate degree in art-making from the University of Washington. Then he worked as the program manager at the galleries at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts, and ran his own gallery by the name of 17 Cox (for its street address) in that city. He went on to earn a masters degree in business administration from Endicott College in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got a BFA and an MBA, which basically makes me start asking questions,\u201d Spivey says. \u201cYou do two different things in your life and you want to reconcile it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How do artists make it work financially, he wondered. Why aren\u2019t more artists addressing this? (Greg Cook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Spivey moved out to Tieton, Washington, a city of some 1,200 people located about a three hour drive southwest of Seattle. There he served as the executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tietonarts.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tieton Arts &amp; Humanities<\/a>. The nonprofit facilitates \u201cparticipation, collaboration, and community-based entrepreneurship\u201d by offering a mosaic sign production studio, exhibitions of small art, an annual weekend-long poetry workshop, D\u00eda de los Muertos celebrations, that sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p>After he brought the \u201cMobile Incubator\u201d to Boston in 2016, he parked it outside the Boston Center for the Arts and held office hours for a public art residency last July, and then at Harvard University in October, and at Ringling College in Sarasota, Florida, in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole point is to be inside a work of art. And it just allowed people to open up in a different way,\u201d Spivey says. \u201cThis is the power of art. (Melissa Blackall)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Why don\u2019t art schools offer more business training?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a little upset that art schools aren\u2019t providing it, but I understand it,\u201d Spivey says. Students, faculty and administrators are interested, would like the schools to offer business training. But schools move slowly. Offering such programs brings up curriculum planning and accreditation questions. Then there\u2019s the cost. \u201cMy exhibition is a way to get started,\u201d Spivey says. \u201cAnd, honestly, I\u2019m cheaper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people are too narrow-minded about what they consider art,\u201d Spivey says. There used to be an appreciation for trade and craft, for the handmade, for your local musicians or actors, he says. \u201cFor some weird reason, it got super conceptual and academic. (Greg Cook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The \u201cCulture Hustlers\u201d exhibition, Spivey says, came out of asking: \u201cWhat if I took what is usually a really visual thing and had an art show and embedded business?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The artists in the show are meant to be inspirations\u2014Chicago prankster artist <a href=\"http:\/\/derekerdman.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Derek Erdman<\/a>, San Francisco rainbow psychedelic painter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kristinfarr.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kristin Farr<\/a>, Detroit metal workers Amy Weiks and Gabriel Craig\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithshopdetroit.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith Shop<\/a>, the Washington state sign shop <a href=\"http:\/\/tietonmosaic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tieton Mosaic<\/a> (launched in 2013 by Tieton Arts &amp; Humanities, along with Mighty Tieton and the city of Tieton), and New Mexico\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evfac.org\/programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Espa\u00f1ola Valley Fiber Arts Center<\/a>, which sustains regional weaving traditions and fosters new craft by offering classes, studio space and a shop. \u201cYou can\u2019t copy them word for word because they\u2019re already doing it,\u201d Spivey says.<\/p>\n<p>Erdman is \u201csomebody you can look at and be inspired because they found a way to be popular that\u2019s true to them,\u201d Spivey says. The Smith Shop is an example of couples as partners. \u201cIt\u2019s really a good model. Mom and pop shows have been a model for thousands of years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Spivey says these artists aren\u2019t \u201cnot role models per se, but they\u2019re thinking about what would be right for me. It\u2019s not a step-by-step. It\u2019s one inspiring story that gets you thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On his website, Spivey writes that \u201chis research demonstrates that the cultural sector is limited by a lack of access to capital, intellectual property and legal acumen, and disproportionate low marketing budgets. I do sponsorships on the podcast,\u201d he says. He\u2019s looking for institutions to pay him to develop and present exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI make it available to them to have a national conversation about arts business, which they wouldn\u2019t be able to do in-house because all their faculty has to live within an hour radius,\u201d Spivey says. \u201cStudents love what I do. They write me emails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuccessful business owners ask themselves the right questions every day,\u201d Spivey says. Art entrepreneurs, \u201cinstead of asking questions about art history context, they\u2019re asking questions like should I be a membership organization, should I focus on Instagram? How do I put myself out there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spivey says, \u201cI\u2019m hoping if people start thinking of it as businesses, they\u2019ll start thinking about how it helps other people.
