{"id":5722,"date":"2018-02-06T21:01:53","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T02:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=5722"},"modified":"2018-02-06T21:01:53","modified_gmt":"2018-02-07T02:01:53","slug":"tiny-bathroom-concerts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2018\/02\/06\/tiny-bathroom-concerts\/","title":{"rendered":"Tiny Bathroom Concerts Are Kind Of Like Tiny Desk Concerts But, You Know, In Bathrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An appearance on NPR\u2019s in-office Tiny Desk Concert series\u2014the intimate musical performances recorded live at host Bob Boilen\u2019s desk\u2014has become one of those signs that you\u2019ve made it in the music world since the video series launched in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Now welcome <a href=\"http:\/\/thedickpicks.com\/index.php\/tiny-bathroom-concerts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tiny Bathroom Concerts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re a lot like the Tiny Desk Concerts except, you know, recorded in bathrooms around here.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ty_07TGJD3Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy band applied to do the Tiny Desk Concert two times with no luck,\u201d explains Alec Hutson of Somerville, the mastermind behind the new music video series. \u201cThis is kind of my tongue-in-cheek response to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hutson has performed music with Joe Froeber And The Drunk Monkeys and, until a few months ago, he says he was part of an eight-piece band called the Alec Hutson Trio. His experiences in music have given him a desire to highlight local musicians and bands \u201cthat I feel are underappreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission is to put a spotlight on Boston bands\u2014but expanding out to New England,\u201d he says. \u201cGiving bands that deserve to be seen a chance to be seen in a way that is memorable, and is also high quality, that takes a bit of seriousness from the music. A lot of bands forget that music is a thing that is not always something that you have to take deadly serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MUS1P0Wraag\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The project began as a promotional thing. \u201cI have a product in the making called Dick Picks, guitar picks shaped in ways that you might expect,\u201d Hutson says. But the videos \u201ckind of became the primary focus, more than the product, much more than the product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far he\u2019s filmed \u201cacoustic, stripped-down sets\u201d performed by local friends of his\u2014the pop rock of Strains Of A Sunflower (pictured at top), pop singer-songwriter Anders Olson, the \u201cquiet and eerie\u201d indie folk of Strawberry Machine, the soul\/funk of Ali McGuirk.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/--JzzKelSeg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The first two videos were recorded in bathrooms in his Somerville place. The next three have used bathrooms in the Moishe House in Boston\u2019s Brighton neighborhood. He\u2019s been \u201cpicking houses with multiple bathrooms to make the most of our audio engineers and camera crews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always looking for new venues,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve always thought it would be good to gat a public restroom with a big band with all the different members in a different stall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help fund the project, Hutson has launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/TinyBathroomConcerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">patreon page<\/a>.
