New England Patriots football coach Bill Belichick is not necessarily known for being the most welcoming fellow. But Palmer Murphy<\/a> had an idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI drew a picture and I showed it to some people,\u201d the Westerly, Rhode Island, sculptor says. \u201cUsually they say, \u201cYou\u2019re crazy.\u2019 This time they said, \u2018We know you\u2019re crazy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea was for a door knocker resembling the notoriously taciturn coach.<\/p>\n

Murphy has made a lot of sports sculptures and toy soldiers over the years, as well as a a doorstop in the shape of the twins from \u201cThe Shining\u201d and a \u201cMadoff piggy bank with a fake plug in the bottom. You couldn\u2019t get your money out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor some reason I was always interested in things that were functional,\u201d Murphy says. \u201cI had seen one of the version of \u2018The Christmas Carol.\u2019\u201d He was struck by the Jacob Marley door knocker that comes magically to life. \u201cThat always impressed me\u2014to have a face on the door.\u201d While that idea was rolling around in his head, he saw some shots of Belichick.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hoodie is a natural frame,\u201d Murphy says. And the coach\u2019s headset mic could be the knocker. \u201cI got the references and the profiles and looking at the television documentaries. \u2026 I thought it was going to be a caricature, but as I got into it, I thought I better be as realistic as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took about 80 hours,\u201d he says. Then he had it cast in bronze at Sincere Metal Works in Chelsea.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s known for that less than welcoming expression,\u201d Murphy says of Belichick. \u201cIt\u2019s not hard to find pictures of him with that expression\u2014an intense, baleful look, a glower.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s something funny about it, I guess that\u2019s the thing,\u201d he says. \u201cSo you can ward off the aluminum siding salesman.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m told it\u2019s supposed to go up on EBay\u201d through the Super Bowl, Murphy says. \u201cIt\u2019s the artist\u2019s proof. You can\u2019t sell more than one. We\u2019ll see what kind of interest there might be.\u201d<\/p>\n
