They were going to be thrown away \u2026 until three local teachers came along.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTowards the end of the march in Boston, me and few colleagues and friends found an impromptu exhibition of the posters that had been arranged all around the perimeter of the Boston Commons and because we found out that they were going to be destroyed, we decided to rescue the signs,\u201d Alessandra Renzi\u2014who initiated and produced the project with her colleagues Dietmar Offenhuber and Nathan Felde\u2014says in a documentary video about their effort.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5462\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5462\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/picArtOfMarch2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5462\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/picArtOfMarch2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Collecting 2017 Boston Women's March signs with on-site volunteers. (Dietmar Offenhuber).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The trio of Northeastern University professsors got permission from city workers to collect the signs for posterity. People pitched in to help them load some 6,000 posters into a rented van to be taken away for safekeeping. These have now been digitally scanned to create a browsable, online public archive called <a href=\"http:\/\/artofthemarch.boston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cArt of the March.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Renzi says, \u201cThey valorize the fact that protest is a very important tool to retain the democratic structures in society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Offenhuber says in the video, \u201cThe one thing that really made this collection unique [is] that it\u2019s almost like a complete snapshot. It\u2019s not just taking the 30 best signs or the most representative signs but taking everything.
