{"id":4506,"date":"2017-12-17T12:00:17","date_gmt":"2017-12-17T17:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=4506"},"modified":"2017-12-26T08:53:14","modified_gmt":"2017-12-26T13:53:14","slug":"wee-the-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2017\/12\/17\/wee-the-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Wee The People: Talking With Kids About Why There Aren\u2019t More Black And Brown People In Museums"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;We want to go to the museum and see black and brown people,&#8221; Tanya Nixon-Silberg of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WeeTP.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Wee The People<\/a> told children during a social justice story time that was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/158568591420296\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Give the Gift of Black Children&#8217;s Literature&#8221; event<\/a> at the Frugal Bookstore in Boston&#8217;s Roxbury neighborhood yesterday. &#8220;We want to see people like us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She read the book &#8220;Milo&#8217;s Museum&#8221; by Zetta Elliott and Purple Wong, and talked with the children about equity in representation in our museums. (Greg Cook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nixon-Silberg and Francie Latour are two moms who founded Wee The People to teach children about protest, racism, class, xenophobia, gentrification, gender and difference through visual and performing arts so &#8220;that kids can engage on their level.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt came out of us wanting to go to a protest and realizing they\u2019re not really family friendly,\u201d Nixon-Silberg told me earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Their first event\u2014a family march for social justice\u2014was in spring 2016. They often appear at libraries and children&#8217;s events.
