{"id":3898,"date":"2017-11-21T05:56:23","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T10:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=3898"},"modified":"2017-12-03T12:33:54","modified_gmt":"2017-12-03T17:33:54","slug":"ukeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2017\/11\/21\/ukeles\/","title":{"rendered":"Trailblazing Feminist Artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles Plans Cambridge Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trailblazing feminist artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles (far right) was up here from New York last week to plan projects with the Cambridge Arts Council (one of my day jobs)&#8211;and I was so honored to meet her.<\/p>\n<p>Her landmark early projects were at the intersection of motherhood and art and so-called &#8220;women&#8217;s work.&#8221; In 1973, she gave performances <a href=\"http:\/\/thewadsworth.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Matrix-137.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Hartford&#8217;s Wadsworth Atheneum<\/a> in which she washed the museum&#8217;s floor and its grand entrance stairs. She called it &#8220;Maintenance Art.&#8221; In projects like her subsequent longtime residency with the trash collectors at New York&#8217;s Department of Sanitation, she has continued to bring attention and honor to the folks in our society who clean up after others.<\/p>\n<p>In Cambridge, plans are being made with with Cambridge Art&#8217;s conservation team to restore of her \u201cGalaxy Dance Floor\u201d (pictured) at Danehy Park, a large park created atop a capped garbage dump.
