\u201cHe didn\u2019t deserve to be shot. I called for help. I didn\u2019t call for a murder,\u201d said Hope Coleman. She had called for an ambulance to come to her Boston home to take her mentally ill, 31-year-old son Terrence to a hospital on Oct. 30, 2016, but police who arrived shot him dead. Officers alleged that he came at them and EMTs with a knife.<\/p>\n

She broke into tears as she recounted her son\u2019s death, speaking to a crowd of around 300 people who\u2019d gathered at Codman Commons in Boston\u2019s Dorchester neighborhood for Mass Action Against Police Brutality\u2019s MLK Day March for Justice<\/a> this afternoon.<\/p>\n

When she followed the ambulance to the hospital that October day, she said, \u201cThey said he was shot in the groin and the abdomen. I know that\u2019s the artery and you\u2019re gone. They said he died on the way to the hospital. \u2026 My son was the quiet type. He was a mama\u2019s boy. \u2026 He didn\u2019t bother anybody. He needs justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe in Hope,\u201d the crowd chanted in support.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t stupid. He needed help. I called for help and they killed him,\u201d Hope Coleman said. \u201cIf I\u2019d know that, I wouldn\u2019t have called.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other mothers of men killed by Boston police also spoke. The march headed up Washington Street to Dorchester District Court, where they rallied again.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say \u2018Why are you out here?\u2019 Police aren\u2019t getting indicted. And if they\u2019re getting indicted, they\u2019re getting off,\u201d Brock Satter of Mass Action Against Police Brutality told the crowd before they set off. And, he said, \u201cWe\u2019re here to talk about mass incarceration. It\u2019s not about law. It\u2019s about social control. It\u2019s the new Jim Crow.”<\/p>\n
