Update Feb. 3, 2024:<\/strong> Striking Newton public school teachers won increased pay, increased family leave, and increased mental health supports for students in a tentative contract deal with the city that was announced Friday night, Feb. 2. Classes are expected to resume Monday, Feb. 5, after the Newton Teachers Association had been on strike since Jan. 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We won’t break!” hundreds of striking Newton public school teachers chanted during a rally around the city’s Ed Center at 100 Walnut St. this afternoon as contract negotiations continue. “We believe that we will win!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Newton Teachers Association has been on strike since Jan. 19, calling for<\/a> increased pay for teachers, aides and behavioral therapists; increased family leave; and increased mental health supports for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is really just getting down to it’s all about the money,” School Committee Chair Chris Brezski said during a press conference Wednesday night<\/a>. “But there’s really only one kind of progress that matters right now: my kids aren’t going to school again. This has gone to far. We need our kids back in school.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
