{"id":24430,"date":"2024-01-27T08:43:12","date_gmt":"2024-01-27T13:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=24430"},"modified":"2024-03-17T16:42:44","modified_gmt":"2024-03-17T20:42:44","slug":"plexus-polaire-moby-dick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2024\/01\/27\/plexus-polaire-moby-dick\/","title":{"rendered":"How Puppet Magic Brings Plexus Polaire&#8217;s &#8216;Moby Dick&#8217; To Life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the perfect way of bringing something back to life,\u201d says Julian Spooner, who plays the narrator Ishmael in <a href=\"https:\/\/artsemerson.org\/events\/moby-dick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plexus Polaire\u2019s puppet version of \u201cMoby Dick.\u201d<\/a> &#8220;Everyone is kind of brought back into existence through the form of puppetry. &#8230; The puppeteers breathe life into these people who ceased to live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show by the French-Norwegian theater company is presented <a href=\"https:\/\/artsemerson.org\/events\/moby-dick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by ArtsEmerson<\/a> at the Emerson Paramount Center, 559 Washington St., Boston, from Jan. 23 to 28, 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m retelling the story of the voyage with Captain Ahab with the other sailors and whalers in their hunt for Moby-Dick,\u201d Spooner explains. The 85-minute production includes seven performers, 50 puppets, video projections, a three-person \u201cdrowned orchestra,\u201d and a \u201clife-sized whale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WYg1xuBaVH4?si=7NA0cAE19Zkp2lI_\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like how the sea somehow draws invisible lines between the different corners of the world, how it creates points of connection,\u201d Plexus Polaire Artistic Director Yngvild Aspeli says in a press release. \u201cHow, facing this force of nature, we are all the same. And no-one captures the battle between man and nature like Herman Melville in \u2018Moby-Dick.\u2019 An ancient white whale, a captain steering his ship into destruction and the inner storms of the human heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This version of Ishmael\u2014\u201che\u2019s like a poet on a whaling trip,\u201d Spooner says\u2014emphasizes the suicidal thoughts that drove him to the sea and working for Ahab. The captain rages with his fatal obsession to chase and kill Moby-Dick, the whale who took his leg in a previous bloody encounter. The puppetry effects dramatic shifts in perspective and scale\u2014a wide vista of a whale hunt, a bird&#8217;s eye view of the boy Pip drowning in a vast sea. Often characters, ships, objects seem to be floating through the air\u2014dreamlike, ghostly. It gives the show a haunted air\u2014like a 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century gothic novel about a toxic workplace, or a global warming prequel\u2014with all the crazy, destructive business of decimating the whale population just to acquire oil to burn in lamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MobyDickPlexus-ChristopheRaynauddeLage2-scaledw.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Moby Dick&quot; by Plexus Polaire. (\u00a9Greg Cook photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>About 20 fishermen appear in an opening scene\u2014actually six masked puppeteers, each holding a pair of life-sized sailor puppets with faces that match the puppeteers\u2019 masks. And the show features three different sized Ahabs: &#8220;There&#8217;s a giant Ahab. There&#8217;s a man-sized or a 6-foot one. There&#8217;s a smaller one,\u201d Spooner says. In one scene all three appear on stage at once\u2014the mechanics of the effect are straightforward, but it feels like a nightmare, like time has fractured, like Ahab\u2019s personality has fractured. (\u00a9Greg Cook photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sock puppets become a shimmering school of fish. There are many puppets on sticks and rods\u2014seagulls, whales, the ship, the whaleboats. Together the small puppet-boats become a panoramic vista of a heartbreaking whale hunt\u2014\u201cwith a tiny boat we can have a broader view of all the other boats and the small whales,\u201d Claudel says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the whales are sculpted from foam. Some have slices along the underside to better articulate the tails. \u201cFor the whales, it\u2019s always the head first, up and down,\u201d Claudel describes the movement. \u201cWe also have sharks. Sharks, it\u2019s the opposite.\u201d Side to side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u201clife-sized\u201d Moby-Dick glides by at the end, looming, slow, majestic, a close encounter with the mammoth creature\u2014the effect achieved via a large curtain that is pulled across the stage. \u201dPuppetry is always on the line of illusion,\u201d Spooner says. \u201cIt works best when you&#8217;re flipping between being lost in the illusion and being reminded of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MobyDickPlexus-ChristopheRaynauddeLage13-scaledw.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Life-sized&quot; Moby-Dick in &quot;Moby Dick&quot; by Plexus Polaire.
