{"id":23824,"date":"2023-09-20T21:16:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T01:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=23824"},"modified":"2023-09-21T00:18:02","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T04:18:02","slug":"andrew-mowbray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2023\/09\/20\/andrew-mowbray\/","title":{"rendered":"Andrew Mowbray\u2019s Wind-Driven Drawing Machine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In July, a nearly 20-foot-tall weather vane appeared at the edge of Provincetown harbor, next to Angel Foods, at 467 Commercial St. in the East End.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s Boston artist Andrew Mowbray&#8217;s 2009 sculpture \u201cTempest Prognosticator\u201d\u2014brought here through October by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.provincetownpublicart.org\" target=\"_blank\">Provincetown Public Art Foundation.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>White polyethylene fins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cvr71qPNDbH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">turn the weathervane into the direction of the breeze or are pressed up and down by the force of the wind.<\/a> The movements cause a pen inside a canister on the black steel vertical axel to a produce a seismograph-like scribble of the weather\u2014horizontal for the wind\u2019s direction, vertical for the wind\u2019s power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI get to open this present and see what the weather did over the past week,\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/provincetownindependent.org\/arts-minds\/2023\/09\/06\/andrew-mowbray-pursues-the-unpredictable\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mowbray recently told The Provincetown Independent<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a functioning weathervane that creates a record, but at the same time it\u2019s creating a drawing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If this is the kind of coverage of arts, cultures and activisms you appreciate, please support Wonderland by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/wonderlandlandfanclub\" target=\"_blank\">contributing to Wonderland on Patreon<\/a>.
