{"id":22966,"date":"2023-05-13T01:16:15","date_gmt":"2023-05-13T05:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=22966"},"modified":"2023-05-13T17:03:51","modified_gmt":"2023-05-13T21:03:51","slug":"wetu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2023\/05\/13\/wetu\/","title":{"rendered":"Wetu Constructed At Cape Ann Museum Recalls Indigenous History Of Gloucester"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 1613, when the French explorer Samuel de Champlain published his book \u201cLes Voyages,\u201d he labeled the area now called Gloucester, Massachusetts, as \u201cle Beau port,\u201d the beautiful port, because of the appeal of its natural harbor. On the land surrounding the harbor, he identified more than a dozen indigenous huts standing amidst farm fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I couldn\u2019t help thinking of that illustration when visiting the wetu, a traditional indigenous rounded dwelling, that the Wampanoag curatorial firm SmokeSygnals, with support from the local partners, erected at the Cape Ann Museum Green in Gloucester on May 5 and 6. The tree branch framing stands on the wide lawn between <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.capeannmuseum.org\/collections\/historic-properties\/\" target=\"_blank\">three 1700s buildings<\/a> owned by the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction is part of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.capeannmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/native-waters-native-lands\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Native Waters; Native Lands,\u201d<\/a> itself part of Gloucester\u2019s plans to mark the 400th anniversary of three ships arriving from England in 1623, bringing European settlers hoping to colonize the land and fish for cod. &#8220;Native Waters; Native Lands,\u201d organizers say, is intended to \u201chighlight how Native communities live, travel, and fish in this region both historically and today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum projects are in collaboration with the Gloucester 400+ Anniversary Committee, Discover Gloucester, the City of Gloucester, and SmokeSygnals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1170\" height=\"937\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Map_of_Gloucester_Harbor_Le_Beauport_by_Samuel_de_Champlain_from_Les_Voyages_Paris_1613w.jpg\" alt=\"French explorer Samuel de Champlain's rendering of \u201cle Beau port&quot;--now Gloucester, Massachusetts--published his 1613 book \u201cLes Voyages.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-22965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Map_of_Gloucester_Harbor_Le_Beauport_by_Samuel_de_Champlain_from_Les_Voyages_Paris_1613w.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Map_of_Gloucester_Harbor_Le_Beauport_by_Samuel_de_Champlain_from_Les_Voyages_Paris_1613w-768x615.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Map_of_Gloucester_Harbor_Le_Beauport_by_Samuel_de_Champlain_from_Les_Voyages_Paris_1613w-370x296.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">French explorer Samuel de Champlain&#8217;s rendering of \u201cle Beau port&#8221;&#8211;now Gloucester, Massachusetts&#8211;published his 1613 book \u201cLes Voyages.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Champlain is believed to have <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.capeannmuseum.org\/about\/history-cape-ann\/\" target=\"_blank\">encountered some 200 Pawtucket people <\/a>during his second sailing voyage here in 1606. But by 1617, diseases brought by English settlers would kill three quarters of the indigenous population in what&#8217;s now Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SmokeSygnals plans to create a mushoon (a traditional wooden dugout canoe) at Gloucester\u2019s Stage Fort Park for&nbsp;\u201cA Celebration of Place: The Cultural Heritage Festival\u201d<em> <\/em>presented by the Gloucester 400+ Anniversary Committee&nbsp;on Oct. 7 and 8, 2023. Following the festival, the boat and wetu will be displayed together at the Cape Ann Museum Green through 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally the tree branch beams of wetus would be clad in reeds or bark.
