\u201cThis is from Boston to let you know how much we love you,\u201d Juliann Rubijono told the passing group of preschoolers.<\/p>\n

She and two other people affiliated with MassMovement were out front of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center on Malcolm X Boulevard in Boston\u2019s Roxbury neighborhood this morning. They had been writing with chalk on the sidewalk, writing words of support to the center and its people: \u201cWe stand with you,\u201d \u201cYou are not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re an evolution of Boston for Bernie [Sanders]. So we\u2019re very much standing for compassion actions,\u201d Rubijono told me. Inspired by a similar project that reached out to Muslims in Nashville, they organized \u201cChalk Boston with Love.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is in response to all the fear that\u2019s happening in the community. We just want to show that we\u2019re here for the long term, to build bridges in the community,\u201d Rubijono said. \u201cWhen you come from a family of immigrants, I\u2019m first generation myself, my grandfather is Muslim, so for me, it\u2019s very important to reach out in an interfaith way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The gesture appeared to come as something of a surprise, though a welcome one, to folks at the center\u2014who came out and thanked the chalk writers. One woman employed there said, \u201cIt brings hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
