{"id":21589,"date":"2022-05-03T11:49:30","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T15:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=21589"},"modified":"2022-05-03T11:50:24","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T15:50:24","slug":"plastic-bag-store","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2022\/05\/03\/plastic-bag-store\/","title":{"rendered":"Puppet Film \u2018Plastic Bag Store\u2019 Considers Our Dependence On Fossil Fuels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What will be the legacy of our dependence on plastics made from oil, natural gas or coal?<\/p>\n<p>That question is at the heart of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robinfrohardt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robin Frohardt<\/a>\u2019s puppet film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theplasticbagstore.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPlastic Bag Store,\u201d<\/a> which will be <a href=\"http:\/\/artsarlington.org\/calendar\/?n-a&amp;event_id=319887&amp;fid=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">screened for free in-person at Arlington\u2019s Regent Theatre and online on Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m.<\/a> via a program from Arts Arlington. The screening will be followed by a virtual Q&amp;A on art, activism, and plastic with Frohardt and <a href=\"http:\/\/artsarlington.org\/artist-in-residence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michelle Lougee, whose public artwork \u201cPersistence\u2019<\/a> is on view along the Minuteman Bikeway in Arlington through June. (<a href=\"http:\/\/artsarlington.org\/calendar\/?n-a&amp;event_id=319887&amp;fid=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reserve tickets here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In the film, Helen, a\u00a0custodian at the Metropolitan\u00a0Museum, \u201cbristles when she finds that a plastic cup has been left by a museum-goer next to one of the august Greek antiquities. When Helen&#8217;s shift ends, she takes the cup with her, and thoughtfully\u00a0gathers other litter\u00a0as she journeys home. We follow Helen&#8217;s trash on an ironic and\u00a0imaginative journey through time, and are challenged\u00a0to consider how we (and our plastic) might be misinterpreted by\u00a0future generations,\u201d according to the production company, Pomegranate Arts.<\/p>\n<p>The show, Arlington Arts notes, \u201crevealed another aspect of throw-away plastic: it lasts forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pzGKWprdG2c\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 60-minute film is based on Frohardt&#8217;s 2020 \u201csite-specific installation-cum-puppetry-show\u201d of the same name in New York\u2019s Times Square. \u201cDesigned to look like a real grocery store and set in a storefront, visitors are quickly confronted with the fact that all the products\u00a0are actually made from recycled plastic bags and single use plastics, harvested from the garbage bins of New York City,\u201d Pomegranate Arts writes.<\/p>\n<p>But covid intervened in the March 2020 premiere. \u201cThe project had one magical dress rehearsal for an audience of friends, and then indefinitely the doors to the Store were locked,\u201d Pomegranate Arts writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow the puppet show has been captured in a lyrical film, following a plastic bottle into a dystopian future \u2018after the robot wars,\u2019 where it is carefully uncovered and exhibited as a trace of a vanished civilization,\u201d ArtsArlington writes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>If this is the kind of coverage of arts, cultures and activisms you appreciate, please support Wonderland by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/wonderlandlandfanclub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributing to Wonderland on Patreon<\/a>.
