{"id":20676,"date":"2021-10-06T13:17:52","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T17:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=20676"},"modified":"2021-10-06T19:52:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-06T23:52:10","slug":"moki-cherry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2021\/10\/06\/moki-cherry\/","title":{"rendered":"Moki Cherry\u2019s Visionary Tapestries From Her \u2018Total Art And Life Project\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swedish artist Moki (Karlsson) Cherry and African American jazz trumpeter Don Cherry saw themselves as \u201cmodern nomads\u201d as their toured the world with their art and music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor traveling, fabric was a great, practical solution,\u201d Moki wrote somewhere around 2004 to \u201906. \u201cRoll it up, put it in a couple of duffel bags. Go on tour with the family and musicians in a minivan. Improvising on stage and in living. So I started making big tapestries for the stage and to transform the space. The visual work consisted of images for the imagination, but also for music\u2014scales, songs, rhythms\u2014for people\u2019s participation in concerts and workshops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Iu3OLnQvl-g\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They were endeavoring to reshape their world. Hanging her banners immediately changed spaces where Don performed his trance music, helping turn them into portals to utopian worlds. Moki also painted murals in the homes in which they lived\u2014from New York to Stockholm\u2014making the places immersive art environments. Walking into her Queens, New York loft, \u201cwas like entering planet Moki,\u201d her friends Karen Edwards and Elspeth Leacock remembered in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Moki-Cherry-New-York-Notes\/dp\/197448095X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 book \u201cMoki Cherry: New York Notes.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moki Cherry\u2019s banners, paintings and drawings are the subject of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corbettvsdempsey.com\/exhibitions\/moki-cherry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cCommunicate, How?: Paintings and Tapestries, 1967 &#8211; 1980\u201d at Chicago\u2019s Corbett vs. Dempsey<\/a> gallery from Sept. 3 to Oct. 9, 2021. The exhibition is part of recent efforts (really just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernamuseet.se\/stockholm\/en\/exhibitions\/moment-moki-cherry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over the past five years<\/a> or so) to recover her art from obscurity. Moki, as she became known, was then a fashion student who frequented jazz clubs. After seeing Cherry play with the Sonny Rollins Quartet at one venue, she and friends headed to a second club that same night, where some of Rollins\u2019s band were sitting in with another band. Cherry approached her group of friends to speak with her, she later recalled, and they spent the rest of the evening talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stood in the floor-to-ceiling window on the second story lookin out at the snowy street, talking about love on some other elevated plane\u2014music,\u201d she\u2019s quoted in Blank Forms gallery&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artbook.com\/9781733723589.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 book \u201cOrganic Music Societies,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe immediately connected on a creative level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karlsson was familiar with Cherry\u2019s 1958 and \u201959 free jazz recordings with Ornette Coleman\u2014the importance of which \u201ccannot be overestimated,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/10\/21\/arts\/don-cherry-is-dead-at-58-trumpeter-of-a-lyrical-jazz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times wrote in 1995<\/a>. \u201cThe rhythmic relationship between the two musicians, loose and flexible yet completely empathetic, took jazz modernists away from an emphasis on overt discipline and precise detailing.\u201d Cherry was now a regular sideman for jazz groups led by Rollins, John Coltrane, Steve Lacy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20614\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/021_high-res-RCHw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20614\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/021_high-res-RCHw-890x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Moki Cherry, &quot;Organic Music (Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos, Moki, G. (Corbett vs. Dempsey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Karlsson (1943\u20132009) and Cherry (1936\u20131995) began touring together for the first time in the summer of 1965\u2014and she began dressing Don\u2019s band Togetherness. It was the start of their joint projects, which \u201ctook Don\u2019s music out of exploitative and commercially driven jazz circuits and integrated it into a total art and life project that broke away from convention,\u201d Lawrence Kumpf, New York gallery Blank Forms\u2019 artistic director, writes in the introduction to the gallery&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artbook.com\/9781733723589.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 book \u201cOrganic Music Societies.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The publication is full of vintage photos and archival documents, an astonishingly deep dive into the previously little explored history of the couple\u2019s collaborations. They would marry in New York in 1978.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea was that when you are on stage it\u2019s home and when you are home you are on the stage,\u201d Moki Cherry wrote somewhere around 2004 to \u201906, as quoted in \u201cOrganic Music Societies.\u201d \u201cI think it was the atmosphere at the time to bring the music out of the jazz clubs setting to combine with other artforms. (Corbett vs. Dempsey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They launched their art and music project Movement Incorporated in 1967, later renaming it Organic Music or at times Organic Music Theatre. They roamed across Europe for Don\u2019s concerts, \u201cDon driving and Moki cooking in the back of the van,\u201d Edwards and Leacock write.<\/p>\n<p>The couple looked for inspiration outside the West, paralleling the recentering that came with the anti-colonial movements of the post World War II period. As Don Cherry helped pioneer world music through a fusion of jazz, Brazilian ceremonial hymns, Indian raga, Chinese zither, Malian donso ngoni, and Turkish and South Asian music; Karlsson painted album covers, designed posters, and stitched together outfits and banners that they used in performances and workshops. (Corbett vs. Dempsey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBy the mid 1980s, Moki and Don had drifted apart,\u201d John Corbett of Corbett vs. Dempsey gallery writes in the exhibition catalogue, \u201cseparated by his substance abuse and the estrangement of life on the road and her mounting personal resentments and dissatisfaction with the omnipresent sexism of the music and art worlds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking for my muse,\u201d Moki Cherry jotted on one of the papers collected in \u201cNew York Notes.\u201d \u201cAll the classical muses are female young women. Are there any muses for women or do we have the same ones? I made you my muse at the sound of a trumpet. Somewhere it all turned around and I was captive\u2014captivated. I see a powergame somewhere classical possessiveness.
