{"id":20050,"date":"2021-08-12T21:02:41","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T01:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=20050"},"modified":"2021-08-12T21:02:41","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T01:02:41","slug":"grove-hall-mural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2021\/08\/12\/grove-hall-mural\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul Goodnight And Larry Pierce Collaborate On Grove Hall Mural"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The design for Boston artist Paul Goodnight and Larry Pierce\u2019s temporary, printed mural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nowandthere.org\/mentoringmurals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cNo Strings Detached\u201d<\/a> began with Goodnight\u2019s row of animated musicians playing violin, stand-up bass and banjo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe universal appeal, obviously, was music, and I used string instruments to emphasize a certain kind of music,\u201d Goodnight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/culture\/arts\/2021\/07\/28\/paul-goodnight-larry-pierce-mentoring-murals-grove-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Boston.com<\/a>. \u201cAnd the banjo itself was a cultural part. There were a couple of cultural parts, but the banjo itself, which is the centerpiece, came from Africa and of course it has been modified over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Painting separately in their own studios, Pierce came up with the hip-hop, classical and contemporary dancers haloed by circles. The images were combined digitally by technical designer Robert Murrell and printed as two large panels on fine mesh.<\/p>\n<p>The project is mounted on a 13 by 60-foot wall on the side of Breeze\u2019s Laundromat at 345 Blue Hill Avenue in Boston\u2019s Grove Hall neighborhood through Sept. 10. It\u2019s part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nowandthere.org\/mentoringmurals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMentoring Murals,\u201d a pilot project from Boston independent public art curators Now + There<\/a> in collaboration with Greater Grove Hall Main Streets and support from Breeze\u2019s Laundromat.<\/p>\n<p>Now + There writes: \u201cTo amplify the Black mural movement\u2019s past and present in Roxbury and Dorchester, the project builds on the importance of mentorship in maintaining a vibrant Black arts community by inviting artists to team up with a younger artist to create side-by-side works of art on a visible wall in the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20054\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20054\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/mm1w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20054\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/mm1w-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Goodnight and Larry Pierce\u2019s temporary, printed mural \u201cNo Strings Detached\u201d at Breeze\u2019s Laundromat, Grove Hall, Boston, 2021. (Courtesy Now + There)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Thursday, Aug. 19th, from 6 to 7 p.m., Now + There will host a live, in-person edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/nt-asks-where-do-art-business-and-social-equity-intersect-tickets-165158857589?aff=odeimcmailchimp&amp;mc_cid=5f3fe2e3cf&amp;mc_eid=dc6c0e9351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;N+T Asks&#8221;<\/a> outside Breezes Laundromat &#8220;to explore how art, business and social equity intersect.&#8221; The panel will include \u201cNo Strings Detached\u201d artists Paul Goodnight, Larry Pierce, and Robert Murrell Jr., plus Karen Bunch of Greater Grove Hall Main Streets, local business owners and community members.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Grove Hall Main Streets Executive Director Ed Gaskin recalls that when he came to Grove Hall the city\u2019s public art listing recorded only one artwork in the neighborhood. \u201cLearning of the relationship between public art and economic development, and the challenges artists of color have in getting the opportunity to display their work, we set out to change that,\u201d he said in the press release. \u201cMurals were one way to bring more public art to the community, but they are expensive, permanent, and limited to muralists.\u201d This project, he says, means \u201cart infrastructure will be in place for us to display the best established and emerging artists from a range of styles, at a much lower cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ekua Holmes of the Roxbury Sunflower Project and London Parker-McWhorter are designing the next printed mural, to be on view from Sept. 15 to Nov. 10.
