{"id":19910,"date":"2021-08-10T23:24:44","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T03:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=19910"},"modified":"2021-08-12T11:28:31","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T15:28:31","slug":"paperhand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2021\/08\/10\/paperhand\/","title":{"rendered":"Paperhand Puppet Intervention Featured In New Documentary \u2018We Are Here\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIn my darkest doubtfulest moments, you know, we\u2019re doomed, humans,\u201d Donovan Zimmerman says at the beginning of the new documentary video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperhandfilm.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWe Are Here.\u201d<\/a> \u201cThey won\u2019t destroy all life on earth, but a fairly large number. It\u2019s just a matter of how big of an extinction we\u2019re going to face. Or create, more like, because we\u2019re are literally creating it. When I see some of the worst of people\u2019s behavior, I doubt that there\u2019s any way back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zimmerman and Jan Burger met in 1998 and began what became <a href=\"http:\/\/paperhand.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paperhand Puppet Intervention<\/a>, an activist theater company based in Saxapahaw, North Carolina. They create environmentalist and anti-capitalist spectacles from masks, giant puppets, stilters, shadow puppetry and music. \u201cOur vision is inspired by our love for the earth and its creatures (including humans),\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/paperhand.org\/who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they say<\/a>. \u201cWe will use this puppetry, performance and creativity to undermine and eradicate greed, hate and fear and promote justice, equality and peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperhandfilm.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWe Are Here,\u201d by Marc Levy and Marc Salomon of The Marcs<\/a>, documents the creation of Paperhand\u2019s 2019 summer spectacle called \u201cWe Are Here,\u201d an outdoor pageant about polluted cities, developers felling forests, and the\u00a0beauty of nature\u2014animated by enormous trash monsters and tree spirits. The Marcs\u2019 film \u201cabout artists trying to save the world\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperhandfilm.com\/screenings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">premiered at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw on Aug. 6, 2021.<\/a> They&#8217;re scheduled to screen it again at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paperhandfilm.com\/screenings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Varsity Theatre in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Thursday Sept. 9<\/a>. Then Levy aims to bring it to film festivals. (He now has two daughters and a son between the ages of 7 and 11.) \u201cOne of the first things somebody told us\u2014we had younger children\u2014is you\u2019ve got to check out Paperhand Puppet theater,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Paperhand performs their epic summer shows for thousands of people outdoors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u2019s Forest Theatre, a stone amphitheater built into a wooded hillside. (Courtesy of The Marcs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Levy was drawn to Zimmerman\u2014thoughtful and laid back, but also worried about the world, driven to make great work, and pushing the company to this goal. Seeing Zimmerman at the shows, Levy was inspired to see him \u201cmoving people in the way he does for such a good cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Paperhand was developing its 20th annual summer show, \u201cI went out with my camera and started filming them.\u201d Levy videoed most of it himself during summer of 2019, over roughly four months in which the show was made at an old gymnasium in Saxapahaw and then at the Forest Theater in Chapel Hill, focusing particularly on the last month, plus a couple more shoots about four months later, including the company\u2019s participation in an Extinction Rebellion protest at which activists chant: \u201cWe won\u2019t let our planet die.\u201d Then Levy and his partner Salomon co-directed while they edited the video.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20016\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/monster_2w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20016\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/monster_2w-1024x436.jpg\" alt=\"From \u201cWe Are Here\u201d by Marc Levy and Marc Salomon of The Marcs: Paperhand Puppet Intervention performs their 2019 summer spectacle called \u201cWe Are Here\u201d in North Carolina. (Courtesy of The Marcs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Paperhand cancelled their 2020 summer show to help stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. This summer&#8217;s show <a href=\"http:\/\/paperhand.org\/summer-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cUnfolding Seeds: Invocations of Transformation\u201d<\/a> is scheduled to be performed at the Forest Theatre from Aug. 27 to Oct. 3. The company says the show is a story \u201cthat honors the things that are lost, that adorns the Earth, and that offers forth avenues for regenerative repair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of shooting \u201cWe Are Here,\u201d Levy asked Zimmerman what motivated him. (Courtesy of The Marcs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In documentaries and interviews and public talks over the years, Burger and Zimmerman have often spoken about their concern about the damage our society is doing to the earth\u2014and, in particular, their worries about the threatened devastation of global warming. In \u201cWe Are Here,\u201d their worry feels more urgent, their sense of dread and doom more palpable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s an extreme point of view,\u201d Levy says. \u201cMaybe that\u2019s the point. Maybe it\u2019s not extreme. \u2026 Maybe they\u2019re seeing the truth and maybe we\u2019re not seeing the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the most grand scale we\u2019re in the fight of our collective lives,\u201d Levy says. \u201c\u2026Human-caused climate change is the issue. It appears that we have a very limited time to change course before the earth will become less and less habitable for humans and all life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paperhand shows \u201calways end with a jig,\u201d Levy says. \u201cThe world is always better at the end of a Paperhand show. Everybody is happy.
