“All praise to our freedom,” Liza Zayas said during the opening invocations for Boston artist If\u00e9 Franklin’s Juneteenth Celebration at Black Market Nubian Square as part of the premiere of her film “The Slave Narrative of Willie Mae”<\/a> on June 19, 2021. \u201cAll praise to our power. All praise to our beloved ones\u2014their voices had to be whispered.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were blessings and history lessons. Then Franklin introduced the ring shout, explaining that history books say it\u2019s the oldest African American dance, but \u201cIt\u2019s not just a dance, it\u2019s a way to communicate with God.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ife invited people to join the dance: \u201cThis is how you conjure. This is how you stir it up.\u201d<\/p>\n
