{"id":19625,"date":"2021-06-13T12:26:44","date_gmt":"2021-06-13T16:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=19625"},"modified":"2021-06-18T14:25:32","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T18:25:32","slug":"her-flag-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2021\/06\/13\/her-flag-2\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Her Flag\u2019 Celebrating Centennial Of Women\u2019s Suffrage At National Museum of Women in the Arts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A flag celebrating the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which ensured women\u2019s right to vote within the United States Constitution, will be displayed on the New York Avenue facade of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., June 10 until July 12, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/exhibitions\/her-flag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cHer Flag\u201d<\/a> project was created by Oklahoma artist Marilyn Artus in collaboration with a woman artist from each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th Amendment by 1920 to create an 18-x-26-foot U.S. flag. Each of the collaborating artists created a stripe\u2014depicting notable women from the suffrage and civil rights movements as well as contemporary girls and women, or addressing the ongoing effort to protect and expand voting rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Her Flag\u2019 is not only a celebration of what was achieved 100 years ago but also a reminder that when it comes to women\u2019s rights, we are still working toward true equality,\u201d museum Director Susan Fisher Sterling said an a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Among the participating artists were Allison Cole of Rhode Island, Amie Kennedy of Maine, Nicole LaRue of New Hampshire and Kari Percival (my sweetheart) of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Artus made road trips to the capitals of each of the 36 states, in the order that they ratified the amendment, to sew that state\u2019s stripe onto the \u201cHer Flag.\u201d (The live events shifted to virtual events when the coronavirus pandemic arrived after her 25th stop.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12865\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12865\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picKariHerFlagOldStateHouse190725w_0775w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12865\" src=\"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picKariHerFlagOldStateHouse190725w_0775w-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Marilyn Artus stitches on the eighth stripe to the bottom of &quot;Her Flag&quot; at the Old State House, Boston, July 25, 2019. This project is about moving forward. This project is not about Democrats or Republicans. It is about Americans.
