Sonya Clark has been named the winner of deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum’s 2020 Rapport Prize to honor “a distinguished artist with strong connections to New England.” Clarks’ art “advances critical conversations surrounding social injustice and racial inequality,” the museum wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A professor of art and the history of art at Amherst College since 2018, Clark is best known for her participatory performance \u201cUnraveling,” in which she invites people to help her unravel a Confederate flag. \u201cI really started thinking about how long would it take until the Confederacy didn\u2019t haunt us anymore,\u201d Clark told me in 2018<\/a>. Deconstructing the Confederate flag became a metaphor. \u201cI just wanted to see what it would look like. If that piece of cloth was taken down to its threads would it become this passive thing? Would you think that maybe it came from the American flag?\u201d<\/p>\n
