{"id":16300,"date":"2020-05-01T15:01:52","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T19:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=16300"},"modified":"2020-05-03T10:15:34","modified_gmt":"2020-05-03T14:15:34","slug":"great-scott-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2020\/05\/01\/great-scott-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It Is With A Heavy Heart Today That I Announce That Great Scott Will Not Reopen\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIt is with a heavy heart today that I announce that Great Scott will not reopen,\u201d according to a message from Tim Philbin, the Boston rock club&#8217;s long-time manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GreatScottBoston\/photos\/a.71921203763\/10158227989313764\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted on facebook,<\/a>\u00a0instagram and twitter this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The venue, located at 1222 Commonwealth Ave., Allston, had been closed since mid-March as part of community efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus. &#8220;After several weeks of dormancy, the venue was informed by its building landlords that its lease would not be renewed,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/vanyaland.com\/2020\/05\/01\/great-scott-a-boston-rock-club-institution-will-not-re-open-after-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Marotta reports at Vanyaland.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The landlords were willing to extend the lease if we would not do live music anymore,&#8221; booker <a href=\"https:\/\/luke.substack.com\/p\/that-was-the-first-time-a-lot-of?fbclid=IwAR1W2_ZB64JBVi-YYc5hwJKTso5QRkCWTa7H8E9zC-cA-Igb2MzZ2iXdDDc\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carl Lavin tells Luke O&#8217;Neil<\/a>. &#8220;They were open to extending the lease for two years. Frank was like I don\u2019t have the money to pay to keep it open [during the shutdown]. &#8230; He\u2019d have to borrow it to stay in business just long enough to be forced out in two years anyway and still have this loan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/okK_cw1p6CA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor 44 years Great Scott has provided entertainment and more than a few beverages for a loyal group of customers,\u201d the social media posts read. \u201cFrom its inception in 1976 as a local bar featuring blues and folk performers to the 1980s and 1990s as a beloved college dive featuring cover bands and DJ nights, to the 2000s and its emergence as one of the best lives venues in the city, Great Scott has meant many things to many people. Through I all we\u2019ve aspired to be a good neighbor to our community and a friend o all who walk hrough our doors. There is a sign that still hangs in the venue from the establishment that Great Scott replaced. The name of which was Brandy\u2019s. That sign reads, \u2018Where Incredible Friendships Began.\u2019 I\u2019m glad we never took it down because it explains Great Scott better than I ever could. These employees will have great difficulty securing other positions while we are closed as all bars, clubs, and restaurants in Massachusetts are closed as well. Any donation is greatly appreciated and with your help we can make things a little easier for some worthy people. To add further transparency, As General Manager, I will be distributing all funds collected to hourly employees. No donations will go to management or ownership.
