With Boston Mayor Marty Walsh yesterday urging everyone to wear face coverings when going out as a way to help stem the spread of coronavirus, statues of Boston Celtics legends and monuments to former mayors near Boston City Hall are now sporting masks.<\/p>\n

Masks have appeared on the the 2013 statute of Boston Celtics star Bill Russell by by Ann Hirsch on Boston City Hall Plaza and on the 1985 statue of longtime Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach by Lloyd Lillie outside Quincy Market at Faneuil Hall. Statues of former mayor Kevin White at\u00a0Faneuil Hall and James Michael Curley on Congress Street (by Lloyd Lillie, 1979\u20131980) also got masks.<\/p>\n

Walsh yesterday announced \u201cstrict new measures for social and physical distancing for residents in the City of Boston, in an effort to curb the anticipated peak of COVID-19 in the coming days,\u201d according to a public statement from the mayor\u2019s office<\/a>. These include \u201cEncouraging everyone to wear a face covering over their mouth and nose when in public: In addition to social distancing when going out in public for an essential trip, wearing face covers will help to reduce the risk of a person spreading the virus, especially if they do not know they are sick. Face coverings should be worn anytime someone is outside the home, including on walks or other passive recreational activities.\u201d<\/p>\n
