On Thursday, Marilyn Artus brought her national \u201cHer Flag\u201d<\/a> women\u2019s suffrage centenary celebration to Boston. To mark the hundredth anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed the right to vote regardless of sex, she is visiting each of the 36 states that ratified the amendment within the first year. In each state, Marilyn has enlisted a local female artist to create a stripe to be sewn onto a massive American flag.<\/p>\n

People gathered in a meeting room on the second floor of the Old State House in Boston<\/a>, as the Oklahoma artist stitched on the eighth stripe–illustrated by Malden artist Kari Percival (my sweetheart). Cambridge\u2019s Jen Deaderick, author of \u201cShe the People,\u201d spoke about the history of women’s activism and voting.<\/p>\n
