{"id":10871,"date":"2019-03-22T06:46:01","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T10:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=10871"},"modified":"2019-03-22T11:04:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T15:04:34","slug":"purim-gloucester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2019\/03\/22\/purim-gloucester\/","title":{"rendered":"In Gloucester, Celebrating Purim With Costumes, Stories And Beer: \u2018It Is A Mitzvah\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As is traditional, the families gathered at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/586141601854629\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gloucester&#8217;s Temple Ahavat Achim for their annual celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim<\/a> on Wednesday evening were costumed as superheroes and princesses, ninjas and giant bananas.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Steven Lewis, himself wearing a long, crazy wig, announced that the party aimed to accomplish three things that night: &#8220;Hear the megillah read&#8221; (the Biblical story), &#8220;collect money for people who are in need,&#8221; and &#8220;beer. It is a mitzvah to have a beer or other intoxicating beverage.&#8221; In other words, it was a commandment, their religious duty. (Greg Cook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The ancient Purim tale is a story of the Jewish people surviving in the face of a dire threat. It begins with a Persian king ordering his wife to dance for his guests in her crown\u2014and, apparently, nothing else. She refuses, so he replaces her a new queen, Esther.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never ask your spouse to show up at a party and dance in a crown. (Greg Cook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Haman, a top advisor to the king, becomes upset when a man by the name of Mordecai fails to bow to him. So he hatches a plot to murder all the Jews in the empire. But Esther turns out to be Mordecai\u2019s niece\/cousin and a Jew herself.
