In Keaton Fox\u2019s \u201cGreen Screen Dreams\u201d videos, people standing painting canvases answer\u2014and then their answer magically appears on their painting. For one person, it\u2019s a swirling galaxy. Homeless folks appear in another painting when a person answers: \u201cI would paint portraits of people who need it. People who don\u2019t see themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m adopted from China,\u201d another painter says, describing a desire to remake Chinese communist propaganda posters, to address the \u201cone-child policy. \u2026 I want to change the narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreen Screen Dreams\u201d<\/a>\u2014on view at Cambridge Community\u2019s Karen Aqua Gallery, 438 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, through the end of the day this Friday, March 15\u2014is a series of seven paintings (all sort of haphazardly filled in with the same emerald green) hung along one wall and then screens showing corresponding videos of people painting them as Fox, off-screen, asks them questions. Fox is taking advantage of the green screen video special effect that allows that particular green to drop out of the video and be replaced in the footage by other imagery. It\u2019s often used in movies, for example, to place actors in fantasy worlds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love green screen because for me it\u2019s a source of magic,\u201d Fox says. \u201cIn the eras we live in, we don\u2019t take the time to think how exciting these now technologies are. Granted green screening is not a new technology. But I think there\u2019s a lot of magic in it that people haven\u2019t explored.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fox, who works part-time at the Cambridge cable access station and part-time for the Boston Cyberarts Gallery in Jamaica Plain, says the project was a way to get herself away from her computer (\u201cI feel like my brain\u2019s melting\u201d) and do more collaborating with her community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it would be a fun idea for people who are not painters to paint something,\u201d Fox says, \u201cand have it look exactly like what they want it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

What people say they wish they could paint, somewhat unexpectedly, offers glimpses into the painters\u2019 hopes and desires. One man says he\u2019d paint \u201cmy view looking out of my cabin in New Hampshire, two big pine trees, mountains and blue sky. \u2026 My cabin is my favorite place in the world.\u201d A rendition of it magically appears on the canvas he\u2019s painting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just people trying to capture realities in front of them,\u201d Fox says, \u201cbut also trying to capture past and future realities.\u201d<\/p>\n
