{"id":10502,"date":"2019-03-02T21:06:39","date_gmt":"2019-03-03T02:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=10502"},"modified":"2019-03-03T11:19:11","modified_gmt":"2019-03-03T16:19:11","slug":"second-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2019\/03\/02\/second-line\/","title":{"rendered":"New Orleans Second Line Parades Photographed By Pableaux Johnson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMy goal with these photographs is to capture in a single frame what it feels like to be in the middle of a Second Line,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/pableaux.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pableaux Johnson<\/a> has said, \u201csandwiched between the horn line and a parked car, riding the rope that defines the club\u2019s sacred dance floor, sneaking in to catch the frenetic buckjumping style that matches New Orleans contemporary brass band music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, also a food and travel writer, has been diligently documenting second line parades for the past decade, but first began photographing them when he arrived in New Orleans in 2001. They are generally thought to have originated from Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs that sprang up in New Orleans\u2019 African American community mid-19th century to provide insurance, funeral services and other mutual-aid when white-run businesses refused to sell black folks insurance and other services. Now the clubs are best known for organizing brass band parades that wind through the city some 40 Sundays each year.<\/p>\n<p>The parades are led by a \u201cfirst line\u201d made up of a marching band and club members splendidly attired in custom suits and gowns and dancing along carrying parasols, sashes, and feathered fans.
