Sacred Cod<\/p>\n<p>God made Gloucester<br \/>\nto fish.<br \/>\nNet regulations<br \/>\nare handed down<br \/>\nlike commandments<br \/>\nand are broken as easily.<\/p>\n<p>2. A Legend<\/p>\n<p>Howard Blackburn<br \/>\nrowed<br \/>\nuntil his fingers<br \/>\nfroze off.<br \/>\nModern day fishermen<br \/>\nsit in the<br \/>\nBlackburn Tavern<br \/>\nand drink<br \/>\nuntil their fingers<br \/>\nare numb.<\/p>\n<p>3. Statue<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo they who go down<br \/>\nto sea in ships\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olson (a foreigner)<br \/>\ndescribed<br \/>\nthe Man at the Wheel<br \/>\nas a god.<\/p>\n<p>He is just a man<br \/>\nat a wheel.<br \/>\nAnd there are lots<br \/>\nof men rolling bones<br \/>\nat the bottom<br \/>\nof the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>They take the cold<br \/>\nlike real men<br \/>\nand do not turn<br \/>\nseasick green.<\/p>\n<p>4. Sea Salt<\/p>\n<p>No prostitutes<br \/>\nin Gloucester.<\/p>\n<p>the women<br \/>\nare as starved<br \/>\nas men.<\/p>\n<p>They scratch and<br \/>\nclaw and<br \/>\ntie down<br \/>\nwhatever heat<br \/>\nthey can get<br \/>\ntheir hands on.<\/p>\n<p>5. Port<\/p>\n<p>Love<br \/>\nis<br \/>\npassed<br \/>\nthrough many hands&#8211;<br \/>\nit has been cut<br \/>\ntwice<br \/>\nby each (<br \/>\nleaving scars<br \/>\n) less potent<br \/>\nand less dangerous<br \/>\nthan the real<br \/>\nthing &#8212; heroin<br \/>\nis strong<br \/>\nand needles<br \/>\npiercing.<\/p>\n<p>6. Neighbors<\/p>\n<p>they fight<br \/>\ndownstairs<br \/>\nand on<br \/>\nthe street<br \/>\n\u201cwhy<br \/>\ndon\u2019t<br \/>\nyou<br \/>\nsuck<br \/>\nher<br \/>\ncunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>7. Connections<\/p>\n<p>my grandfather<br \/>\nthe first pediatrician<br \/>\non the island<br \/>\nhas saved many &#8212;<br \/>\nbrothers, daughters,<br \/>\nfriends &#8212;<br \/>\nand many enemies.<\/p>\n<p>8. Colony<\/p>\n<p>artists fester<br \/>\nin coffee shops and wharfs<br \/>\nsucking<br \/>\nthe real life<br \/>\nout of real people<\/p>\n<p>9. Lanesville<\/p>\n<p>Urksie<br \/>\na drunk Finn<br \/>\ndirects traffic<br \/>\nwith the authority<br \/>\nof a warrior<br \/>\nor walks<br \/>\nwith a lawn mower<br \/>\nand dog<br \/>\nlooking for jobs<br \/>\nto buy<br \/>\nfirewood.<\/p>\n<p>10. Our Ladies of Good Hope<\/p>\n<p>They sit still<br \/>\nwith candles lit<br \/>\nunder Saints<br \/>\nhanging<br \/>\nfrom the ceiling<br \/>\nwelcoming passersby<br \/>\nwith blaring records of Elvis<br \/>\nand homebaked goods<br \/>\npraying to Peter:<br \/>\nreturn our sons safe<br \/>\nfrom the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>11. Memorial<\/p>\n<p>Each year<br \/>\nwe drop<br \/>\nflowers<br \/>\ninto the<br \/>\nwater<br \/>\nunder the<br \/>\ncut bridge<br \/>\nby the<br \/>\nbarren<br \/>\npedestal.<br \/>\nThe statue<br \/>\nfor the fishermen\u2019s<br \/>\nwives<br \/>\nhas<br \/>\nnever<br \/>\nbeen<br \/>\nerected.<\/p>\n<p>12. Ropes<\/p>\n<p>fishermen\u2019s hands<br \/>\nare sinews<br \/>\nknots<br \/>\nrope burns<br \/>\ndead skin<\/p>\n<p>13. Jail<\/p>\n<p>out the window<br \/>\nof the courthouse<br \/>\nyou can see<br \/>\nbeyond<br \/>\nthe breakwater<\/p>\n<p>14. Exodus<\/p>\n<p>Lane<br \/>\nStuart<br \/>\nHopper<br \/>\nHancock<br \/>\nSargeant<\/p>\n<p>didn\u2019t matter<\/p>\n<p>15.
