{"id":10229,"date":"2019-02-01T10:59:06","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T15:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/?p=10229"},"modified":"2019-02-01T10:59:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T15:59:06","slug":"ajijaak-henson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregcookland.com\/wonderland\/2019\/02\/01\/ajijaak-henson\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ajijaak On Turtle Island,\u2019 Heather Henson\u2019s Puppet Spectacle With Indigenous Roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first-works.org\/events\/heather-henson-presents-ajijaak-on-turtle-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAjijaak on Turtle Island\u201d<\/a>\u2014by Heather Henson (daughter of Muppets creator Jim Henson) and IBEX Puppetry\u2014is an environmental fable, Henson says, about \u201chow to survive and thrive into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The giant puppet spectacle being performed tonight at Providence\u2019s Moses Brown School \u201cis about a whooping crane on its first migration,\u201d Henson says. But Ajijaak\u2014an Ojibwe word for sandhill crane\u2014gets separated from her parents when they flee a fire and is left to make her first migration south and back alone. It\u2019s a tale of a lost child on a great adventure, trying to find her parents, meeting animals and Native people along the way. \u201cThese are Indigenous people that are still alive today and tell their stories,\u201d says Ty Defoe, a Grammy Award winner who co-directed the show with Henson, and has Oneida and Ojibwe roots himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the mainstream world, mainstream thinking is really out of balance. \u2026 There is a lot of turning to Indigenous knowledge for leadership,\u201d Henson says. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing environmental theater for a lot of time and I\u2019ve been wanting to give platforms to our Native voices on these topics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9FcyPGGSecQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAjijaak on Turtle Island\u201d was written by Defoe, with lyrics by Defoe and Dawn Avery, music by Defoe, Avery, Larry Mitchell and Kevin Tarrant, and based on original storyboards by Henson. It\u2019s presented by Providence\u2019s FirstWorks, which is celebrating its 15th year of productions. Henson and company\u2019s visit has included film screenings, puppetry workshops at Rhode Island schools, and matinee performances for students. (Photo: Richard Termine)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAjijaak\u201d is a magical spectacle of rod-puppet cranes and coyotes, birch branches that transform into a bounding deer, butterflies and birds that come alive as kites soaring at the ends of long sticks, bison performed by puppeteers in grassy masks and costumes. The puppeteers are always exposed\u2014standing beside the puppets, which were designed and fabricated by Jim Henson\u2019s Creature Shop. Projections appear on six disks that hang like moons over the stage. There\u2019s live drumming and singing as well as recorded music and sound effects. The show&#8217;s movement and dancing draws on Indigenous pow wow dances.( \u201cThese dances are social dances, so they\u2019re acceptable to be seen in public,\u201d Defoe says. \u201cWe don\u2019t do ceremonial dancers.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cvery diverse, multitribal, multination cast\u201d (in Defoe\u2019s words) includes Joan Henry, Tony Enos, Wen Jeng, Adelk Polak, Sheldon Raymore, John Scott-Richardson and Henu Josephine Tarrant. (Photo: Richard Termine)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1995, just after graduating from Providence\u2019s Rhode Island School of Design, Henson says, \u201cI was first going to do shows that helped the audience contemplate their relationship to nature.\u201d She created shows about the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone, about zoo animals, about cranes: \u201cCrane: On Earth, In Sky,\u201d \u201cFlight: A Crane\u2019s Story,\u201d \u201cPanther and Crane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cranes \u201cneed the natural systems the way they were intended to be. They need water systems to be free. They need grasses to grow wild,\u201d Henson says. \u201c\u2026They are all over the planet. (Photo: Richard Termine)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is something really special about cranes,\u201d Defoe says. \u201cThe crane in many Indigenous nations is considered the voice of the people. It gives voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, the theme of migration has a charged political resonance with the United States\u2019 current anti-immigration presidential administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything moves and flows with this moving vibrant earth,\u201d Henson says. \u201cThe borders are a concept of this particular political culture that we are in now. These particular borders that we\u2019ve put up are not good for ecosystems. They\u2019re not good for people. (Photo: Richard Termine)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An Indigenous man wearing a horned headdress diagnoses the problem: \u201cSome of us two-legged beings do not think of Mother Earth as living.\u201d A cocky coyote (\u201cI\u2019m cool, I\u2019m so cool\u201d) tricks Ajijaak into going into a city loud with jackhammers to see the construction cranes.
