We’re looking for performers, artists, activists, dreamers, teachers, makers and community groups to be part of the “How to Fix the World Festival.” The June 18 event (rain date: July 8) is a free, one- afternoon mini world’s fair about how we can save the world.

Below are separate calls for (1) artists and (2) presenters to participate in the festival:

CALL TO ARTISTS:

The Somerville Arts Council seeks artists, musicians, performers, dancers and makers to present work at the How To Fix The World Festival. The event is a free, one-day, outdoor festival about how we can save the world. It takes place in Somerville’s Union Square on Sunday, June 18, 2017.

We’re looking for art projects that:

– Identify social problems in the world.
– Analyze social problems in the world.
– Propose or provide solutions to these problems.

We’re looking for art that addresses racism, sexism, global warming, capitalism and other major problems. Make your art serious, critical, humorous, etc. We want art that asks questions as well as art that provides answers. We’re interested in broadsides, healing therapy, protest raps, disconcerting installations, upsetting poetry, visionary paintings, incisive comedy, mobilizing dances, affirming theater, afrofuturism, games, parades, rants, exorcisms.

We want art that represents the rich diversity of our community. We’re especially interested in projects in which the audience can participate. We like unusual ideas, intersectionality, and things we haven’t thought of. Surprise us. Participating artists will be paid a small stipend. Those looking to sell their work will be asked to pay a vendor fee.

Applicants must be available to present their projects on Sunday, June 18, as well as on the rain date three weeks later, Saturday, July 8. CALL TO PRESENTERS:

The Somerville Arts Council seeks dreamers, philosophers, community organizers, teachers, activists, inventors and other people with big ideas to present talks, participatory activities and workshops at the How To Fix The World Festival. The event is a free, one-day, outdoor festival about how we can save the world. It takes place in Somerville’s Union Square on Sunday, June 18, 2017.

We’re looking for proposals for solutions to social problems—including racism, sexism, global warming, the failings of capitalism and other ills. Presented as brief talks (around 5 minutes), demonstrations, models, participatory activities, or workshops in which the audience can participate. Your approach can be serious, critical, humorous, etc. We want projects that represent the rich diversity of our community. We like unusual ideas, utopian thinking, intersectionality, and visionary futurism. Surprise us.

Applicants must be available to present on Sunday, June 18, as well as on the rain date three weeks later, Saturday, July 8.
